I’d happily post a fresh rectangle from Sue Asbury (of … & Asbury fame) every week, but this piece from her recent series – playing with white on white, patina and texture – really caught my eye. Can’t go wrong with a burst of Tunnock wrapper.
At some point Tom Etherington will design a truly horrible, less-than-excellent cover, but there’s no signs of it yet. This one for Jenn Shapland’s new collection of essays (art directed by Kelly Blair for Pantheon Books) is particularly lovely.
I mentioned Yufan Lu’s WePresent essay on the rising trend of cosmetic surgery in China in a previous edition of Meanwhile, but some of the images popped up on one of my various feeds this week (no idea which one … so hard to keep track these days), and there’s just something utterly captivating about them. The colours of this one are just so striking.
“Anthony Angel (1906-1967) photographed New York City street scenes and buildings day after day. The work he bequeathed to the Library of Congress includes around 60,000 images that show many angles on New York City views, people in scenes of daily life, historic sites and construction sites, and much more.” There’s still so much treasure to be found on Flickr, the social network that forgot to stop being.
While looking for something unrelated for a fast-approaching print deadline, I stumbled upon this collection of 1940s adverts for Hercules Incorporated and got thoroughly distracted. Those illustrations! No idea who the artist is – any suggestions?
