Geoff Manaugh on Marx Ernst’s 1926 painting Forest and Sun: “I mistook the tiny white squiggles in the lower right for a procession of human congregants or religious pilgrims, people approaching a huge, alien landform out of some strange act of homage or scientific curiosity. Alas, it’s just Max Ernst’s signature.”
Lots of lovely work with paper and glass on Jess Humphey’s site. I’m particularly taken with 2022 piece, Inherited Traits. As with most collage, I’m intrigued/fascinated by what’s on the other side, just peeking through the paper in reverse.
One of my favourite collagists Mike McQuade recently joined Threads with a bang. Don’t know if this is intended to be an Oppenheimer poster, but that’s immediately what I assumed it was. Rhymes nicely with that Ernst painting.
This post is going out shortly before the announcement of this year’s Eisner Awards winners. All of the fingers crossed for Zoe Thorogood, who has five nominations – two for her memoir It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth. Love her art style – landing somewhere between Jamies McKelvie and Hewlett.
I’ve been a fan of Nick Coupland’s pen and ink architectural drawings for ages now, but it turns out he’s equally brilliant when it comes to paint. Particularly in love with this piece, Exit Strategy West. Just concrete, light and shadow. Brutal deluxe.
